Known as the Big Bend region, between Tallahassee and Gainesville, you’ll find the small town of Perry. This charming town embodies the virtues and allures of rural Florida. Outdoor enthusiasts will find loads of activities offering visitors fishing, hunting, hiking, and boating opportunities. It’s worth the trip to Keaton or Dekle Beach in Taylor County, known for beautiful sunsets, undeveloped coastline, fantastic fishing and scalloping. The Econfina River and the Forest Capital Museum State Parks are a short drive from our hotel and offer additional outdoor adventures. October is a fantastic month to visit Perry, when it hosts the Florida Forest Festival!
Perry comes to a standstill for a lumberjack show, steam engine displays, arts and crafts, and demonstrations of cane grinding, butter churning, blacksmithing, soap making, along with the World's Largest Free Fish Fry. With Perry’s mild climate and unspoiled natural beauty, it allows year-round activities for everyone.
The Forest Capital Museum is made from Cypress and Pine wood with high beamed ceilings and topped with a beautiful glass dome. The museum offers insight into the evolution, ecology and productivity of the forests. Visitors of all ages will enjoy the exhibits of lifelike animals native to the area. The beauty of Florida's native wood is displayed in a carved map of Florida with each of the sixty-seven counties carved from a species of wood native to their area. Make sure to visit "Terry, the Talking Tree" for a message that explains the importance of the forests.
Keaton Beach is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon swimming in the clear, calm waters, and watching the boats cruise by. This beach has a nice playground for kids, plenty of covered seating, restrooms, and showers. For an interesting story make sure to read the bronze plaque that tells the tale of Keaton Beach. There's a rock jetty at the beach that makes for a great backdrop for photos and the sunsets are absolutely stunning.
Apalachee Inshore Charters launches out of Keaton Beach, Econfina, Aucilla River, St. Marks and everywhere in between. Take a fishing trip and catch spotted seatrout, redfish, flounder, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, black bass, sheepshead, and sharks! You can also snorkel the clear waters of Apalachee Bay for delicious bay scallops from mid-June into September. Take a tour with a fun boat ride on the gulf or one of the pristine rivers and everyone will enjoy the sights and wildlife.
